Totusi, intrucat productia in cadrul OPEC este reglementata prin stabilirea unor cote aferente fiecarui stat membru, orice depasire individuala, determinata de decizii nationale, poate duce la supraproductie si scaderea preturilor. Tocmai din acest motiv, intre temele centrale ale reuniunii de la Viena s-a numarat angajamentul statelor membre de a respecta cu strictete cotele de productie, un obiectiv care, in trecut, a fost neglijat in repetate randuri.Ca efect al deciziei OPEC de a-si limita productia, cotatiile petrolului pe pietele internationale si-au reluat cresterea: inainte de reuniunea de la Viena, pretul unui baril ajunsese la 103,26 de dolari la bursa din New York, iar astazi dimineata a crescut la 104,10 dolari la bursele asiatice.
